Q: Does solar PV have to be connected directly to PowerHub to be managed? What are the possible ways for PowerHub to work with solar PV?
No. Solar PV does not always have to be connected directly to PowerHub. The best connection method depends on the user’s existing system setup and the level of energy coordination they want to achieve.
PowerHub can work with solar PV in several ways:
Option 1: Solar PV is not directly connected to PowerHub
For homes with an existing rooftop solar system, the original PV wiring can usually remain unchanged. PowerHub can use built-in metering or external CT sensors to read household consumption, solar generation, or grid import/export status, and then coordinate the storage system accordingly.
This is suitable for users who mainly want to improve solar self-consumption, optimize charge/discharge behavior, or make better use of dynamic tariffs.
In this setup, PowerHub mainly manages the system through metering and energy-flow data. It does not directly control the third-party PV inverter itself.
Option 2: A third-party PV inverter is AC-connected to PowerHub
A third-party PV inverter can also be connected to PowerHub through the designated inverter connection. This allows the PV system to participate more deeply in the home energy system.
In grid-connected mode, PowerHub can switch the PV inverter circuit on or off when needed. In off-grid backup mode, PowerHub can help manage the microgrid frequency to limit or stop the PV inverter, helping maintain system stability.
This setup is useful for users who want solar PV to keep contributing during outages, supporting household loads and recharging the battery where the system configuration allows.
Option 3: Solar PV is connected directly to a compatible storage unit
For storage products with dedicated PV input, solar panels can also be connected directly to the storage unit’s PV input. This is suitable for new solar installations, balcony solar systems, or users who prefer a more direct solar-to-storage setup.
In short:
Direct PV connection to PowerHub is not always required for energy management. For basic solar self-consumption optimization, metering and CT data may be enough. For deeper coordination, especially off-grid solar operation during outages, AC-connecting the PV inverter to PowerHub or connecting solar to a compatible storage unit is recommended.
